Black Stallion Series:
One of the best-loved of all the American pony book series. Follows the adventures of Alec and The Black, a magnificent stallion whom he rescues when they are both shipwrecked on a desert island (as you do!) Some of the novels are adventure stories, others set in the world of horse racing. There is also a mystical element in a couple of the books. Unlike many pony book series, such as the Jackie books for example, Alec grows up and develops as a character throughout the course of the series. This also seems to reflect the writing style which grows more complex and mature as the series progresses, although I feel that the supernatural element which creeps into some of the later books does not really sit well with the traditional feel of the rest of the series.

The last book in the series proper,
The Young Black Stallion, was co-written with Walter's son Steven Farley and is actually a prequel to the rest of the series, so could be read first. After Walter Farley's death, the Black Stallion series was continued by Steven, although as I haven't read them yet I don't know if they follow on from the later books in any chronological order. He has additionally written a new tie-in series which features Alec and The Black, but which focuses on a new horse hero and a new main character. (See Steven Farley author page for both the continuation of the series and the new tie-in)

As well as the main series, Walter Farley wrote two other books about sons of the Black who are trained as harness racers. Only one features Alec (Sulky Colt) and they both can be read as stand-alones. Interestingly, the Black Stallion series merges with The Island Stallion series when the two horses and their respective owners meet. (See the Island Stallion Series section for more info)

Three of the books have been made into films, although the adaptation of The Young Black stallion is extremely loosely based upon the book. The films spawned a number of film tie-in editions.

All in print in the USA at time of latest update, 2011.

Collectors Info:
All the series were reprinted many many times, and are therefore easy to find in both the  UK and the USA. They are all still in print in America, some of the titles in the UK also.  One or two titles in the older paperback series are harder to get hold of in the UK. Hardbacks are not often seen here. First editions are rare in the UK, but could be picked up much more cheaply on a US based auction site or website.

Strangely, Black Stallion's Ghost is listed as number 7 in the series however it was actually published after Challenge. However for purposes of reading it doesn't really matter as the book's plot does not pose any chronological issues.

The Island Stallion Series:
Another series about a boy and his affinity to a wild horse, this time a magnificent chestnut called Flame. Interestingly, The Black and Flame meet each other in the books, The Black Stallion and Flame and The Black Stallion Challenged, so the original 3 book series can be continued by reading these two Black Stallion books.

Original Island Stallion Series:

1) THE ISLAND STALLION
(RANDOM HOUSE 1948)

Reprinted in hardback in the USA and in paperback in both the USA and UK.
In print in the USA.

Continuation of the story in the Black Stallion series:

4) THE BLACK STALLION AND FLAME

5) THE BLACK STALLION CHALLENGED
aka THE BLACK STALLION'S CHALLENGE
(RANDOM HOUSE 1964)
Reprinted many times in hardback and paperback in both the USA and the UK.
In print in the USA.
The title was slightly changed when it was reprinted (in both USA and UK) and 'challenged' became 'challenge.'
SUMMARY: Steve challenges Alec Ramsey, owner of The Black, to a race between their two horses.

Collectors Info:
These have recently been reprinted and are now easy to find in the UK and USA, although unfortunately these newer editions have awful cover art. Outside America, the older paperbacks are slightly harder to find than most of the Black Stallion series, especially the third. First editions are rare and can be expensive, and are usually only found in the USA.

Little Black Series:
Charming horsy series designed for younger readers. Picture book style with lovely illustrations.

1) LITTLE BLACK, A PONY
(RANDOM HOUSE 1961)
ILLUSTRATED BY JAMES SCHUCKER
Reprinted in hardback.
SUMMARY: Little Black is upset when his young owner starts spending all his time with Big Red, a large horse who can do lots of things Little Black can't. But when trouble strikes it is up to Little Black to save the day and prove that size is not everything!

2) LITTLE BLACK GOES TO THE CIRCUS
(RANDOM HOUSE 1963)
ILLUSTRATED BY JAMES SCHUCKER
Reprinted in hardback.
Reprinted in hardback in the UK by Collins.
SUMMARY: Little Black proves himself excellent at circus tricks, but will he leave his beloved young owner to join the bright lights of the circus…?

3) THE LITTLE BLACK PONY RACES
(RANDOM HOUSE 1968)
Reprinted in hardback. I
SUMMARY: When his older brother's horse is injured Steve enters the race on Little Black. But the pony is far smaller than all the other mounts: will the pair stand a chance?

Collectors Info:
The first book was also published in the UK. None were reprinted as paperbacks. Quite hard to find outside the USA, especially the third book in the series. All are fairly easy to find in the USA, although once again the third in the series is a little less common than the first two.

Other Pony/Horse Books:

MAN O' WAR
(RANDOM HOUSE 1962)
Reprinted in hardback and paperback.
In print.
SUMMARY: Fictionalised account of the life of the great race horse told from the viewpoint of a stable-boy.

THE HORSE THAT SWAM AWAY
(RANDOM HOUSE 1965)
Reprinted in hardback.
As far as I am aware no paperback editions were published.
SUMMARY: Lavishly illustrated story for slightly younger readers. Tim is lonely in his new Florida home, except for the friendship of his lovely chestnut Arab Tena. The pair spend many happy hours on the beach together, galloping on the sand and swimming on the sea. When Tena swims off to play with a friendly porpoise and disappears Tim must team up with an unlikely ally in order to find his beloved horse, and in doing so also finds a new friend. A charming simple story about finding friendship in unexpected places, with a evocative Florida backdrop.
PONYMAD RATING: 4 HORSESHOES.

Collectors Info:
Man O'War is in print in both the USA and UK and can be bought new. The older hardback editions are harder to find. The Horse that Swam Away is not that common in the USA and is very hard to find outside the States.
